Magna_Carta, most of us use tablets to draw digitally. They are somewhat expensive to buy new, but are an invaluable tool for a digital artist. Others are quite adept at using only the mouse- if you practice enough you'll gain more control, and be able to better establish on screen what you see in your mind. Some people who can only use a standard computer mouse for art opt to work with vectors, because you can achieve professional results without the need of an expensive tablet. Just look around at some of the other threads in this section of the forums and I'm sure you'll find the answers to most of your questions.

Good luck!

edit- Here is a little WIP... just thought I'd give a sneak peek at what I'm up to. My poor old laptop has been crapping out on me tonight (computer: "there is not enough memory to perform this operation" me: "noooooooooo"), and I didn't want to go over to the big computer just to make the resizing look nice, so... sorry for the pixelation XP

Also, Sectus, I feel so silly that I didn't notice your high-res image was in pure greyscale- by the time I realized I couldn't use color, my file size was so big that I was barely able to fix it without crashing the computer

There is a lot of empty space on the elementalist's cloak because I have some fun plans for his robes that, I hope, will look better with less clutter. So close to the 11th, though, that I guess I'm stuck with it whether it works out or not

Magna_Carta, since we're cluttering the contest thread, I'll send you a PM and try to answer as many of your questions as I can.

Rayala: Nice work-in-progress! If you're having too much trouble with colours you could just keep it black'n'white. Of course, having it coloured would be a plus.

Yeah, 2 seperate entries. Although I'm starting to think that little idea for the contest didn't work so well. If there's not enough entries for one of the categories, I'll probably just combine them and then absolutely every entry will count for the one list.

Thanks Sectus- don't worry, I got the colors working fine.
I had to give up on using 16-bit RGB though, my laptop can only handle 8-bit before going all epic fail on me.

...Then again, 8-bit is about 16 million colors, so I shouldn't be complaining

If you combine both contests into one larger one, what do you plan to do about the prizes? Just eliminate the secondary competition altogether, for lack of entries? I'm considering entering one for each, but I'll stick to just working on my first one for now, I suppose.

If I combine the 2 lists the prizes from the second list will be combined with the ones from the first list. But for now I'll keep the current system, it'll only be combined if there's few entries for the second list.

I have my piece sketched that I was going to colour in Photoshop, but I practically had a funeral for my scanner earlier today & I won't have/access to a new one for another week or two.

G'luck to all the entrants!

^^

Yep, it will save in a standard quality. Use Photoshop at Max quality, and baseline optimization..

If you want to add a background, just import the image and place it on a different layer, behind the work you have..

nice entry Magna Carta! (love your name btw)

I don't know how to add a background in paint, but if you have photoshop I could tell you how.
Though, perhaps you can do it like this in Paint (you can try at least): open your background and your drawing as two seperate documents --- cut out your characters from the white background using a cut/selection-tool --- paste your characters on the document with the background --- "blend" by experimenting with different tools
?

Very nice! Long time no see starr...

Anywho, @ Magna:

You need to render you image. Since it has been outlined with black, you can simply use the magic wand tool(hotkey: W). It took me about 2 minutes to go around and delete all of the white background(Note* the hair is tricky). a cleaner alternative is to render using the pen tool, but unless you already know how to do it, it would just seem like a waste of time.

After rendering the image, you can insert your background onto a new layer. Just open the file you want as a background, and drag the layer, from the layers panel, into the rendered image file and set it to behind the rendered image. You can place the background by selecting the layer, and using the Move Tool (Hotkey:V) and moving it around.

If you're still having trouble, try searching for tutorials online.

Thanks^ ^!

My Final Entry^o^!
I love the Cartoonish Feel^ ^, anyway this is all just I can do XD.
I can't render the Photo cause the deleted the Original XD.
So I had to save from what I posted here, which gave lower Quality whenver I edited it.
Making the outline thinner, which stopped me from Rendering also adding a Background.

So I had to paint my own XD.
And cause I got the File from here, I dunno why it doesn't work in Paint.
Now I can't thicken anymore the Outline XD.

Theirs also alot of Errors in my Work^ ^.
It's not that much Visible, but it's quite important^ ^.

Hope you won't say it here XD.

Very nice entries!

There's now only 2 days left of the contest. 11th April will be the last day I'll accept new entries (they'll be accepted until it's 12th of April on Hawaii, which means wherever you are you can just make sure to post it sometime on the 11th)

But I'd like to know if there's any artists who would be interested in joining but don't have time. If there's enough demand I might extend the contest with a week or two.

It'd be nice if the deadline could be extended to cover this weekend still, since weekends are usually the best times for drawing.
Anyhow, I had some sudden stuff come up that prevent me from finishing my entry today and will be cutting it really close to the deadline tomorrow. x_x Need to play taxi to a couple of darling bunnies that have to be driven around the country for several hundred kilometers...
So yeah... I'll try to get it done for the evening of the 11th, but it'll be a close one. :P
